HISTORY

The prickly pear in the birth of a empire.

According to legend, the Mexica migrated from Aztlán in search of the sign given to them by their patron deity Huitzilopochtli of the new place where they were to settle. Once they arrived in the Valley of Mexico and having found an eagle devouring a serpent perched upon a prickly pear cactus, they founded the empire of Tenochtitlán, which in the náhuatl tongue means the ¨Place of abundant prickly pears¨. This sign represented a renovation of life to the ancient Mexica.

For over twenty five thousand years prickly pears have helped the settlers of the southern portion of North America subsist. Natives were long-lived, healthy and strong people due to the fact that they ate prickly pears with thorns which aside from serving them as food, served them as medicine, animal fodder and to make a fermented beverage called nocochtli or pulque.
